Before removing old posts, save the photos, videos and conversations you still want. Request the platform's account export, download it, then open the files before you start deleting.
Request the right account's archive
For Facebook and Instagram, use Meta's Accounts Center to export your information. Check which profile you selected and what the export will include. If you manage several accounts, keep a separate note of which download belongs to each one.
Meta's account information tools
For X, request your archive using its account data controls. X says it can take a few days to prepare, so allow time before a planned cleanup. Follow the current instructions in its Help Center for your device.

Open the files before you delete
A request confirmation is not your backup. Wait for the download, extract it and open the contents. Check an older post, a recent post and any photos or videos you particularly want to keep. If something is missing, resolve that before removing the original.
Keep a second copy
Keep the original download and a second copy somewhere you control, such as an external drive or your own cloud storage. Treat the archive as private: X's export can include direct messages and other account information as well as public posts.
Then choose what goes
Make a short keep list before cleanup: family photographs, work you want to retain or posts that matter to you. Work through one account and activity type at a time, and review your selection before confirming removal.
