Your Instagram likes are not automatically private. Meta describes the Friends tab in Reels as a place where friends can see public content you have liked or otherwise interacted with. Hiding like counts is a separate setting: changing the number displayed on a post does not remove your interaction with it.
What the Friends tab can show
Meta announced the global launch of the Reels Friends tab in August 2025. It described a feed of public content friends have liked, created, reposted or commented on, alongside recommendations from Blends. That gives friends a way to encounter some activity without visiting your profile first.
This is a recommendation surface, not a promise that every like will be shown to every friend. Equally, an interaction being absent from your profile grid does not establish that nobody can encounter it elsewhere.

Hiding the count changes the display
Instagram's like-count controls let you hide public counts on your own posts or stop seeing counts on posts in your feed. Meta introduced them to give people a choice about seeing popularity numbers. They are not an instruction to withdraw likes you previously left.
Ask which problem you are solving. If you want fewer numbers in your feed, a count setting fits. If you want to change what friends are shown, review the relevant activity-sharing control. If you no longer want to have liked an item, review the like itself.

Check the scope of a privacy setting
Meta also announced controls for hiding your own Reels likes and comments from the Friends tab. Read the setting's current description in your account. A control describing one tab should not be treated as a guarantee about every place the original interaction could appear.
There is a useful check before relying on a setting: write down what you expect it to change, then compare that expectation with the label. "Hide the count", "hide activity in Friends" and "remove my like" are different goals. Menu wording and availability can vary, so use the explanation shown in your account.
Review old likes when your goal is removal
If you want to remove a particular like, review that interaction in Instagram. For a broader cleanup, first check how your chosen tool presents the activity. The extension shows Instagram likes as a count, with no individual keep list or reliable date filter. Use the platform itself when choosing specific likes to retain is essential.
Scanning with the extension is free; removal is an optional paid step. Read the cleanup guide and review the total before confirming. Removing your like concerns your account's interaction, not ownership of the original post.
